The area, which is rather extensive, features perfectly aligned vineyards that are cultivated with great expertise by Umbrian vine-dressers. They are the sources of the wines of the Colli del Trasimeno, which received Denominazione di Origine Controllata recognition in 1972.
The Colli del Trasimeno Doc is a wine produced from grapes which are cultivated along the hilly area overlooking the Trasimeno Lake. The vines in this area have very ancient origins.
This Doc includes 4 white wines (Secco, Bianco scelto, Frizzante and Vin Santo), 5 red wines (Rosso, Rosso scelto, Rosso Riserva, Frizzante and Novello), a Spumante Classico, and other various mono wine varieties (Grechetto, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamey, Merlot Riserva, Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva e Gamey Riserva).
The areas of production are all in the province of Perugia: Castiglione del Lago, Città della Pieve, Corciano, Magione, Paciano, Panicate, Passignano sul Trasimeno, Perugia, Piegaro and Tuoro sul Trasimeno.
The Colli del Trasimeno Rosso Doc is probably the most famous of the wines belonging to this denomination, and is ideal for the preparation of structured dishes: hors d'oeuvres made from traditional cold cuts, pasta with ragù sauce, the typical 'porchetta', game, cheese.
It is served at a temperature of 16-18°C in chalices for structured wines and served within two years after vintage.
The Bianco Secco is served with light hors d'oeuvres, fish soup with light sauces, roasted and grilled fish, fish fillets with butter and salvia, and is served in flared chalices at a temperature of 10-12°C. The Spumante version is served in flute chalices at 8°C.
