(A toast to Hannibal the winner, amidst the atmosphere of the battlefield)
In the valley of Tuoro, along the ancient route connecting the Via Cassia and the Via Flaminia, the fateful “Battle of Trasimeno” took place in 217 B.C., with the Roman army headed by Consul Caius Flaminius destroyed by Hannibal.
The memory of the battle is kept alive by an atmospheric route of great archaeological and landscape interest, between the hills and the lake.
The territory is characterized by old baptismal or parish churches (churches with a baptismal font), since after the severe pestilence that hit Umbria in the late 15th century, numerous sanctuaries started to be built, especially ones dedicated to the Virgin.
In fact, considering the epidemics a divine punishment, the people had taken the Virgin Mary as their protectress.
Against the terrible calamity of 1494, the commune of Perugia decided to build, in Castel Rigone, the Madonna dei Miracoli (Our Lady of Miracles) Sanctuary, one of the most important works of Renaissance architecture in Umbria.
The Madonna dell'Oliveto (Our Lady of the Olive Grove) Sanctuary of Passignano, which originated from a small majestic image of worship on a country aedicule, dates from the period of the Counter-Reformation following the Council of Trent.
