(Amongst the goblets of the Templars along the road that led pilgrims, knights, and armies to Perugia)
Along the road between Perugia and Cortona, in the early 13th century the Order of St. John of Jerusalem (from the 16th century, the Order of the Knights of Malta) founded a hospital dedicated to St. John the Baptist, with a church of the same name, making it their seat or “mansio” (home). Indeed, from that moment on, the ancient Pian di Carpine took the name of Magione.
The Order of St. John then turned the hospital into a castle in the early 15th century.
Near Corciano, in the 14th century there was another splendid castle, called Pieve del Vescovo, thus named because it was the country residence of the Bishops of Perugia, complete with extensive grotesque decorations by the Tuscan painter Salvio Savini.
Near the lake, to defend the territory controlled by Perugia, various fortified towns were built between the 13th and 15th centuries, such as Montecolognola, San Savino, Monte del Lago, and Castello dello Zocco, all reflected in splendid view on the lake surface.
The nature and environmental values can be enjoyed in the nature oasis of Isola Polvese, San Savino, and in the Museo della Pesca (Fishing Museum) of San Feliciano.
